This one is a beauty. I’m certain that every horror/thriller/mystery manga fans would love this manga. The author manage to keep this manga full of mysteries and suspense up to the very end. This is not something any manga fans will regret reading.
The story was about a peaceful village named Hinamizawa. The environment and the neighborhood is so peaceful and friendly that Keiichi Maebara (the protagonist) never regret moving to this place. Following how Keiichi tries to fit in really made it feel like there’s nothing wrong with this village.
Then things started turning the other way around as Keiichi begins to find out about the murders in this village. Mysteries by mysteries started popping up in front of Keiichi. His new friends from the village started showing hostility. The next thing you know, Keiichi decided that he can’t trust the whole village including his close friends. All that in just two volumes.
There are many interesting points in this manga. Keiichi’s struggle to choose between his friends and his life was thrilling. The mystery about the curse is another interesting point since it lets you wonder whether it is really a curse or that the curse was actually a cover for something more nasty. Then there is the question of why Keiichi Maebara must be killed? Is there a big reason why a teenage wanting to live a peaceful life needs to be murdered? Is it really the curse of Oyashiro-sama that is behind all the murders? So many questions, so little volume. It’s making you crave for the next mysteries and answers.
Onikakushi is an opening to a big mystery that draws us closer as we follow through the plot. The chance of something surprising to occur in the next arc is huge. Like I said before, you’ll be wanting to know the answer to the mysteries as soon as possible. Though I suggest you patiently wait for the questions to be answered through the plot. I’m sure it’s worth the wait.
On a side note, Onikakushi is the second Higurashi no Naku Koro ni arc that I read. The first one that I read was Himatsubushi. As with Himatsubushi, I enjoyed reading every chapter in this manga. Though I must inform you that I got the order mixed up. Onikakushi was the first of four mystery arc in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni with Himatsubushi being the last one of the mystery arc. Good thing this didn’t cause a significant drop in the mystery since both manga are so good in concealing any relation in their plot. I had fun reading this and will continue reading more Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. I hope you had as much fun as I am.
